What is Reiki?
Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki is a traditional Japanese healing practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s.
The word Reiki translates broadly to “universal life energy,” and the practice is rooted in the understanding that when we are balanced energetically, we are often better able to support our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
The approach practiced at DOC honours the traditional principles of Usui Shiki Ryoho, focusing on presence, connection, and creating a space where the body and mind can deeply relax.
Reiki is not about force or manipulation but rather offering gentle support for the body’s own natural restorative processes.
In modern life, many of us live in a constant state of stress, stimulation, and doing. Over time, this can leave us feeling disconnected, depleted, emotionally overwhelmed, or physically tense. Reiki offers the opportunity to pause. Through stillness, intentional touch, and energetic awareness, the nervous system is encouraged into a calmer state where rest, balance, and healing may be more accessible.
During a Reiki session, the client remains fully clothed, and the treatment takes place comfortably on a massage table in a quiet and supportive environment. I use a series of gentle hands-on placements, allowing Reiki energy to flow where it is needed most. Sessions are deeply individual, and experiences vary from person to person. Some people notice warmth, tingling, emotional release, deep relaxation, or a meditative sense of calm, while others simply experience a feeling of rest and grounding.
At the heart of Usui Shiki Ryoho is the philosophy of cultivating harmony within ourselves and our daily lives. Reiki can therefore become more than just a treatment; for many, it is also a supportive practice for self-awareness, reflection, and reconnecting to a greater sense of balance and inner calm.
Reiki may support:
Deep relaxation and stress reduction
Nervous system regulation
Emotional wellbeing and clarity
Improved rest and sleep
Feelings of grounding and connection
Overall energetic balance and wellbeing
