What is Women's Health Physiotherapy?

Women's Health Physiotherapy supports women with physical health concerns affecting the pelvis, pelvic floor and wider musculoskeletal system throughout different stages of life.

Pregnancy, childbirth, hormonal changes, menopause and ageing can all bring changes to the body and may contribute to symptoms such as pelvic pain, bladder or bowel problems, pelvic organ prolapse, or changes in pelvic floor function.

Women's Health Physiotherapy provides individual assessment, education, rehabilitation and treatment to help you better understand your body, manage symptoms and feel more confident in everyday activities and movement.

What can Women's Health Physiotherapy help with?

Women's Health Physiotherapy can support a wide range of conditions and concerns, including:

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction

  • Bladder or bowel incontinence, urgency and frequency

  • Pelvic organ prolapse

  • Pelvic pain and chronic pain

  • Pelvic girdle pain during and after pregnancy

  • Postnatal recovery and rehabilitation

  • Diastasis recti (abdominal separation)

  • Recovery following perineal tears

  • Pain or discomfort during sex

  • Endometriosis and vulvodynia

  • Interstitial cystitis and bladder pain syndrome

  • Constipation

  • Musculoskeletal and nerve related pelvic health problems

  • Physical changes associated with perimenopause and menopause

You don't need to simply accept changes or symptoms as something you have to live with. Women's Health Physiotherapy can provide information, practical strategies and personalised support to help you make informed choices about your health and wellbeing.

What does an assessment involve?

An initial Women's Health Physiotherapy assessment usually lasts around 60 minutes and takes place in a private and comfortable environment.

Your practitioner will begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history and what you would like help with. Depending on your concerns, your assessment may include looking at your posture, breathing, movement, abdominal and pelvic floor function.

Where appropriate, an external or internal vaginal examination may be offered to assess pelvic floor function or investigate particular symptoms. This would always be discussed with you beforehand and is only undertaken with your informed consent.
